Lyle and Mrs. Primm stumble into their neighbor Mr. Grumps while out shopping at the beginning of the narrative. Because Lyle frightens his cat Loretta, the grumpy Mr. Grumps deems Lyle to be a nuisance and has him in the zoo. When Mr. Valenti, his former performance partner, frees Lyle, they return to the home on 88th Street and discover Mr. Grumps’ house is on fire. After saving Mr. Grumps, Lyle is hailed a hero and granted permission to stay with the Primms.
